September 2026 - Inspection Prep Bundle
Updated for inspections from 1 September 2026
Prepare for your next Ofsted inspection with greater clarity, confidence and control.
The EYBS Ofsted Inspection Readiness Toolkit is a practical working document designed for nursery managers, early years leaders and providers in England. It has been updated to reflect the Ofsted Early Years Inspection Toolkit and the EYFS requirements applying from 1 September 2026.
Rather than creating unnecessary inspection-only paperwork, the toolkit helps you review how your setting operates every day, identify gaps and make focused improvements that positively affect children.
What is included?
The toolkit provides structured self-audit tools covering the key areas inspectors will explore, including:
Safeguarding and protecting children from harm
Inclusion, SEND and support for vulnerable children
Curriculum and teaching practice
Children’s achievement and progress
Behaviour, attitudes and routines
Children’s personal development and wellbeing
Leadership, governance and continuous improvement
Safer recruitment, staff suitability and DBS requirements
Safer sleeping arrangements for babies
Safer eating, choking prevention and weaning
Screen-use guidance
Personal education plans
English vocabulary development
Explicit mathematics teaching
EYFS learning and development exemptions
Practical tools to support improvement
The toolkit includes:
RAG-rated self-audit tables
A safeguarding Met/Not Met readiness check
Evidence-gathering prompts
Professional conversation preparation
Inspection-readiness questions
Action-planning tools
Named-owner and deadline tracking
Evidence and impact recording
A September 2026 compliance checklist
The Red, Amber, Green and Blue rating system helps leaders distinguish between urgent risks, areas requiring development, secure practice and practice that is particularly strong and embedded.
Designed for continuous use
This is not simply a checklist to complete immediately before an inspection. It can be used throughout the year during leadership meetings, supervision sessions, quality-assurance reviews and staff development activities.
Completing the toolkit will help you:
Understand what inspectors are likely to explore
Check whether policies are reflected in everyday practice
Identify inconsistencies between rooms or team members
Prepare leaders and practitioners for professional conversations
Record meaningful evidence of impact
Turn areas for development into clear actions
Demonstrate ongoing evaluation and improvement
Who is it for?
Suitable for:
Day nurseries
Pre-schools
Nursery schools
Early years providers
Nursery owners and directors
Nursery managers and deputies
Room leaders
Quality and compliance leads
Consultants supporting early years settings
This toolkit is an independent Early Years Business Support resource. It should be used alongside the current EYFS statutory framework and official Ofsted inspection documents.
